Marriage of Mr and Mrs Howland

View from the Boundary or View from the Pew!

When you play cricket weddings should be held (if they need to be held at all) on a Friday or in winter. Hypocritically, my wife and I were married in July (a long time ago. I did leave our honeymoon early to play cricket). Everyone was doom and gloom when they heard that Simon and Louise were to tie the knot during the season. Bad form. Even worse was the news that Cam, Myles, Spock and Rob had accepted invitations to the big day!! No doubt they will learn their lesson come selection this week.

We all hope that the big day was marvelous and all former 1st team players enjoyed it! Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Howland. I was going to write you a poem but the only thing that rhymes with Howland is Poundland and I felt this was inappropriate. I assume you are available on Saturday, Si?

On matters cricket, the 1st XI was once again captained by an Australian who took his band of diehards and debutants to bottom side Sandyford. On a good track someone won the toss and Sandyford batted first. They started quickly and were soon 102-3 off 20 overs. They were gradually pegged back to 191-9 dec off 53 overs. Dan (opening bowler), Scott, Snowy and Zain each took 2 wickets and Matt Thomas took the other wicket with a run out.

Tom and new boy, Connor, opened up and added 19 and 17 respectively. Snowy batted patiently for his 57, a captain’s knock. At 88-2 Eccy were cruising. Zain and Chan made 19 and 21 and it was up to Scott (22*) and Dan (17*) to get us over the line for the loss of 6 wickets. A great win and 20 more points and 35 points clear of the drop zone.

At Eccy, Cutters won the toss and asked Whitmore to bat. After a bright start wickets fell quickly and Whitmore were soon 51-5. Will Rhodes steadied the ship and guided his team to 125 all out. Callum and Si Rodgers made 19 and 14 in reply but it was Brammers (55*) and Gasky (13*) who led the 2s home to a 6-wicket win. Cutters picked up 4wickets, Gasky 3 and Robbo 2. Eccy go second again.

The teas were lovely yesterday. My advice to the captain is to tell his mother before 11 pm on the Friday that she is doing teas the next day…….

Well done to everyone who stepped up this weekend to fill in for the revellers.

Congratulations to 2nd Teamer Myles and Amy on their engagement. Little do you know that they have booked their wedding during the season. Did I not make myself clear!!!!
